Walker Road Streetscape Project

Streetscape Rendering

As part of the Town’s initiative to prioritize pedestrian and vehicular safety, changes are proposed to Walker Road.

On a virtual community forum last month, we first introduced potential changes to the direction and design of Walker Road from Paradise Road to Banks Road. In order to better understand the impacts of these changes, the Town has retained the services of Beta Group to conduct a traffic count analysis on Walker Road and surrounding streets over the next month. The traffic study involves installation of traffic count equipment across Walker Road, Banks Road, Farragut Road, Grant Road, Oakledge Road and Swampscott Road. The data collected and the analysis of data will assist the town in understanding traffic flow within this neighborhood, and to plan for road and traffic improvements. Below are details of the temporary changes that will be made to Walker Road in order to obtain data on the impacts on Walker Rd. and surrounding streets resulting from any
directional change on Walker Road.

  • Data collection will begin the week of May 17, 2021.
  • The week of May 24, 2021 to May 31, 2021, DPW with assistance of the Swampscott Police Department will implement a one-way traffic pattern in the southbound direction on Walker Road only (from Paradise Road intersection to Banks Road intersection).
  • The week of June 7, 2021 to June 14, 2021, DPW with assistance of the Swampscott Police Department will implement a one-way traffic pattern in the northbound direction on Walker Road only (from Banks Road intersection to Paradise Road intersection).
  • The week of June 24, 2021 to July 9, 2021, the Town will alter the current traffic pattern at Walker Rd. and Banks Rd. by implementing a temporary rotary (also called a peanut-about). Traffic barrels and signs will be in place to provide additional reminders  to stop or yield when entering the temporary rotary.

Similar to the prior community forum via Zoom and the neighborhood site visit on April 5th, we will schedule another community meeting to share the findings and discuss next steps once the traffic analysis is complete.
Approval by the Swampscott Select Board will be required prior to implementation of any street changes.
