Filing Marriage Intentions

At the present you must make an appointment to come in and fill out the paperwork for your marriage license, the Town Clerk's Office is not providing walk-in appointments for marriage licenses.

In Massachusetts, a marriage license can be obtained in any city or town regardless of one’s residence or location of the ceremony. To complete the marriage intention application, both parties must appear at the Clerk’s office together with unexpired, government-issued photo IDs.

In Swampscott, the cost of filing for a marriage license is $25 and payment can be made via cash or check. There is a three day waiting period in most cases after you file your marriage intentions, and the license is valid for a period sixty days after filing and may be used for a ceremony conducted in any Massachusetts city or town. The officiant who performs the ceremony must sign the license and return it to the city or town where it was issued.
