Swampscott Mask Mandate to be Lifted on February 21

On February 8, 2022, the Swampscott Board of Health voted to rescind the mask mandate in indoor spaces in Swampscott effective at 11:59PM on Sunday, February 20. In making this decision, Board of Health members cited the decrease in the number of lab-confirmed positive cases in Swampscott over the last few weeks and the trend towards this similar action in neighboring communities. Please note that schools will continue to follow DESE requirements.

Once the mask mandate is rescinded, Swampscott will then adhere to the state’s ongoing Mask Advisory that recommends – but does not require – all residents, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a mask or face covering in an indoor setting outside their home. Masking is particularly recommended if you have a weakened immune system, or if you are at increased risk for severe disease because of your age or an underlying medical condition, or if someone in your household has a weakened immune system, is at increased risk for severe disease, or is unvaccinated. Anyone else who wishes to continue to wear a mask is encouraged to do so. Any establishment that wishes to enact its own mask mandate is free to do so.

Please also note that federal and state regulations still require masks in certain situations. The state’s mask requirements continue to remain in place for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals at all times in certain locations, including on public and private transportation, in healthcare facilities, congregate care facilities, emergency shelter programs, houses of correction, health care and day services, and for home health care workers.
