Stormwater Runoff

Stormwater runoff is generated from precipitation and snowmelt events that flow over impervious land, streets, and rooftops and does not soak into the ground. This stormwater can flow into Swampscott's storm drain system and empty directly into the town's fresh waters and Atlantic Ocean. As the water flows it picks up pollutants like litter, salt, oil, pet waste, and dirt/sediment that can harm the local waters, environment, and residents. Stormwater is managed through a combined effort of engineering, planning, maintenance, and outreach to monitor the quality and amount of runoff.
