Town Seeks New Member for Swampscott Housing Authority

The Town of Swampscott and the Swampscott Housing Authority seek residents to apply to fill one vacancy on the 5-member Swampscott Housing Authority board. As this position was vacated mid-term, the new member is to be appointed by the Select Board and Housing Authority Board and will serve until the April 2022 Town-wide election when the existing term expires and a member will be officially elected by the town.

Local Housing Authorities are responsible for managing public housing properties and systems in accordance with all federal and state policies. Public housing receives full or partial funding from the government. The Swampscott Housing Authority oversees 136 units and 7 residents with housing vouchers.

The Housing Authority Board has numerous responsibilities, including but not limited to: ensuring that its executive director and staff are following all regulations and rules set forth by Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD); overseeing all aspects of the employment of the executive director; setting and revising Housing Authority policies; establishing annual operating and capital budgets; ensuring fiscal responsibility; adopting and revising bylaws; holding monthly public meetings; encouraging and supporting tenant participation in the administration of public housing; and maintaining good community relations.

The Town seeks a candidate who can fulfill all duties of the position with a preference toward someone with diverse experiences and who has a passion for supporting those residing in public housing. The resident must be willing to work collaborative with others and assist with identifying solutions to some of the Housing Authority’s regular challenges. Candidates will undergo mandatory training from various organizations to become familiar with all aspects of the housing authority as well as requirements for serving on a public body. Other important information pertaining to Local Housing Authority Board Members can be found on the DHCD website: https://www.mass.gov/resources-for-local-housing-authorities-and-board-m...

The Town of Swampscott values the importance of varied perspectives on the Town boards and committees. Women, minorities, veterans, members of the LGBTQ+ community, persons with disabilities, and members of other underrepresented demographics are encouraged to apply.
