Select Board Open Statement Regarding Protests

An Open Statement from the Swampscott Select Board Regarding Recent Protests

November 11, 2020

Over the past several months protestors have come to Swampscott, some bringing with them the Confederate flag, other intolerant and racist signs, and a megaphone spewing hate.  Political speech on our town common is welcomed and normal, but there is nothing normal or acceptable with these protestors’ rhetoric – it is racist, hate-filled, and ignorant.  It is unwelcomed in our town.  These protestors presence in Swampscott serves only to increase our community’s resolve and commitment to becoming a more accepting, inclusive, and loving community that will work tirelessly to conquer the hate and fear these protestors represent.  These protestors may be speaking from Swampscott, but they do not, and will never, speak for Swampscott.
