Important Information about Hot Weather

Temperature

Due to high temperatures this week, the Town of Swampscott will open the Swampscott Public Library as a cooling center on Tuesday, June 29 and Wednesday, June 30 from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. This location will be open to all residents and will have air conditioning and water available.

Also, on Tuesday, June 29 at 6:30 PM at the Stanley School Field, join the Fire Dept. as they keep the community cool with refreshing water sprayed from their Ladder 21 truck and hoses. All are welcome, and parents or guardians must be there to accompany children.

Please keep these general heat safety tips in mind throughout the next few days:

  • Avoid strenuous activity; cover your head with a hat wide enough to protect your face; and wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Complete outdoor activities in the early morning or wait until the evening
  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • NEVER leave people or pets in a parked car. Leaving a window open is not enough- temperatures inside the car can rise almost 20 degrees Fahrenheit within the first 10 minutes, even with a window cracked open.
  • Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Read the CDC’s list of heat-related illness warning signs on their website.
  • Check on your friends and neighbors to make sure they are staying safe.

If you have questions, please contact the Town of Swampscott at (781) 596-8850. As always, call 911 if you are experiencing an emergency.
