  • Sign up and take the entrance exam when notified that it has been scheduled ($25* fee to take the exam).
  • Anyone who submits their application will receive notification when there is an entrance exam scheduled and a payment portal will be made live at that time.
  • There is no exam currently scheduled at this time.
  • Candidates who successfully complete the application and pass the exam are placed on a list of eligible candidates that the Department can bring in for an interview.
  • Once a candidate is selected, they go through a thorough background check, a physical and psychological assessment and are required to pass the Massachusetts Physical Abilities Test (PAT) for Fire and Police Departments.
  • Once a candidate has passed these requirements and has been hired, they will then be scheduled for the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy.
  • Upon completion of the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy and one year’s service, you will officially be a Swampscott Firefighter!

Qualifications

  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Not be a convicted felon or have any equivalent convictions that would be a felony in Massachusetts
  • Be at least 21 at the time of the entrance examination
  • Not be above the maximum age of 35 at the time of the entrance examination*
  • Be a high school graduate or possess a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Have a Massachusetts Class D driver's license or a transferable license from another state and agree to obtain a Massachusetts Class D driver’s license within six (6) months of appointment to the Swampscott Fire Department
  • Have the ability to obtain a Massachusetts Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license and agree to obtain a Massachusetts Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license within one (1) year of appointment to the Swampscott Fire Department
  • Reside within a 25-mile radius of the Town of Swampscott
  • No tobacco use (smoking, vaping or other product(s)) eg: chewing tobacco etc.

* Could possibly be waived under unique or exceptional circumstances

Salary

  • The starting base salary for entry level Firefighter/EMTs is $57,540
