The Renewable Energy Committee has been active in Swampscott since 2005. Below are some highlights over the years.

| December 2015 | Swampscott selected by National Grid for 2016 energy saving initiative to help residents. |
| July 2015 | Swampscott awarded $225,000 in Green Communities funding for LED streetlight conversion. |
| Summer 2014 | Swampscott receives 150 free LED light bulbs from National Grid. |
| June 2014 | Swampscott is one of four towns sharing a MassCEC $30,000 grant to examine opportunities for behavior changes leading to energy conservation in our schools. |
| Fall 2013 | Swampscott and Salem participate in the Solarize Massachusetts program with the goal of reducing the cost and increasing adoption of small-scale solar installations. |
| June 2013 | Swampscott receives Green Communities Grant of $247,000 for energy projects at schools, library, fire station. |
| March 2013 | MassCEC and Mass DOER select Swampscott to participate in Community Energy Strategies Pilot Program. |
| September 2012 | REC launches the Big Blue Energy Initiative. |
| April 25, 2012 | REC celebrates the installation of 1,960 solar panels at the middle and high schools. |
| March 14, 2012 | Board of Selectmen and School Committee adopt updated Fuel-Efficient Vehicle Procurement Policy. |
| December 2010 | Swampscott designated as a Green Community. |
| June 8, 2010 | Swampscott receives a MassCEC grant to prepare a feasibility study for a wind turbine. |
| May 12, 2010 | Board of Selectmen and School Committee adopt Fuel-Efficient Vehicle Procurement Policy. |
| May 3, 2010 | Four energy-related articles passed at Town Meeting: stretch energy code was adopted; bonding for a $940,616 Energy Services Contract passed; and two zoning articles allowing “Renewable and Alternative Research and Development Facilities” in the town’s Industrial Zone passed. These four articles supported the town’s efforts to become a Green Community. |
| February 11, 2010 | The REC holds a joint meeting with the Salem Renewable Energy Task Force. |
| September 21, 2009 | The REC voted to award the Clean Energy Choice program money ($9559.89) to the High School Physics Club to support their innovative examination of renewable energy technologies. |
| June 2006 to April 2010 | The REC provides regular column article in the Swampscott Reporter called "Ask the Energy Miser" (2008, 2009, 2010). |
| 2005 | Swampscott Board of Selectmen establish the Renewable Energy Committee. |
