In partnership with Simple Recycling, the Town of Swampscott now offers a new no-cost way to recycle unwanted textiles and small household items for residents participating in the existing curbside recycling program.
On December 16, all Swampscott residents received a PINK plastic bag in the mail. As part of this program, residents can place items such as clothing, shoes, single socks, blankets, jewelry, and silverware in these bags, and place them alongside their recycling bins on recycling day to be collected by Simple Recycling. All materials are then sorted based on quality and condition; the higher quality items will be resold at thrift outlets and the unusable items processed for raw materials.
“Proper disposal of our Swampscott’s waste is a major priority for Swampscott,” said Town Administrator Sean Fitzgerald. “As a seacoast community, we all see the daily impact trash disposal has on our environment and our seacoast. Programs like this help improve our environmental sustainability while supporting those in the region who benefit from the reuse of clothes and household items.”
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), more than 84% of old clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, and textile items end up in a landfill or an incinerator. On average, each household disposes of 85 pounds of textile items which make up more than 6% of all the residential and municipal trash in the US and more than 8% in Massachusetts.
This program is offered by SIMPLE RECYCLING at no cost to the Town. To make collection easier, place pink bags at least 3 feet from recycling. Pink bags will not be picked up if they are placed inside of recycling bins. Once a bag is picked up, replacement bags will be left for residents. For a full list of items that can be recycled as part of this program, or to request new bags, visit simplerecycling.com, call 866-835-5068 or email email@example.com.
